Remember, Part 2
Pastors’ Blog
January 20, 2010

Dear [FIRSTNAME],

To this day, over 3400 years later, the people of Israel celebrate the Passover by following the words of Exodus 13:8, “You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’”

This will be a spoiler for Dark City. So read no further if you want to watch it first.

In Dark City, aliens have separated a group of humans into a city. Each day, they erase everyone’s memories and implant new ones. One man stops being affected by these implants, and begins to remember from one day to the next. By the end, he is left with a crisis of identity.

Our memories are vital to our identity. Without your memories, you don’t know who you are.

One philosophy suggests that you may therefore determine your identity apart from your memories. After all, why should your memories, your culture, others’ oppressions and delusions affect who you are or choose to be?

True, perhaps. But pointless. If you determine your identity apart from your memories, you are simply creating a new delusion.

Therefore, God invites us into His own story, to create both new and true memories. These memories, this story gives us a new identity. So, when I read God’s Word, I begin to remember who I truly am.

In Christ,
Pastor Steve
