Remember, Part 1
Pastors’ Blog
January 19, 2009

Dear [FIRSTNAME],

To this day, over 3400 years later, the people of Israel celebrate the Passover by following the words of Exodus 13:8, “You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’”

Monica’s father served in the Navy. So during the interment was a color guard ceremony. I love that ceremony. I especially love when the flag is presented (usually to the wife, but in this case to the oldest son): “On behalf of a grateful nation, this flag is presented to you as a token of appreciation….”

The officer then went down the line of the chairs in front, saying thank you. When he got to Luke, he said, “I want you to tell your grandchildren what your grandfather did for his country.” Luke will not remember. I will remind him.

If a country loses its memory, it will die. If later generations do not incorporate the past history into their own generations, they will lose who they are. We use language like, “When we defeated the British oppressors…; when we defeated the German and Japanese in WWII…; when we ended slavery….” We are reminded of who we are. If a country loses its memory, it will die.

The same is true for the church. We continue to rehearse our history. That is to say, God’s story. My story is incorporated into God’s story. Reading God’s Word and speaking God’s Word to one another is a way to Remember, to remember who you are.

In Christ,
Pastor Steve
