Santa Claus/Father Christmas
Pastors’ Blog
December 15, 2009

Dear [FIRSTNAME],

Monica told me that Luke asked her the other day, “When’s Santa coming?” She told him to ask me. He hasn’t.

I think it kind of funny when people say that “Santa isn’t real.” (It reminds me of a discussion between my wife and brother. “Is that tree real?” “Do you mean real in the sense, Does it exist?”)

Just because something is mythological doesn’t mean it’s not “real.” It just means it’s not historical. There’s a difference. Mythology usually points us to timeless truths. Truths that are often more “real” than much history that’s been written.

I’ve gotten nothing against Santa. We don’t talk about him much at home. And I don’t get worried if people do talk about him.

For me, I’m more concerned about how to talk about Santa in a way that points my son to God’s Son and the birth of God on Christmas. How does the mythology of Santa help us understand Christmas?

In Christ,
Pastor Steve
