PastorsBlog: “When Object Lessons Go Wrong”
September 23, 2009

Mrs. Fairbank and Miss Mockler had a great object lesson for “See You At the Pole” chapel this morning.

The green block represented Jesus as the cornerstone of our lives. Ephesians 2:19-20 says, “You are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,  built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.” ESV

The red blocks were built on this cornerstone to make a house. They represented the other areas of our life. Miss Mockler then removed the Green Cornerstone of Christ. And, quite dramatically, the house…stayed standing!

The house was supposed to collapse. So they had to give the “collapse” a little help.

But didn’t the “object lesson gone wrong” really illustrate the truth? When you remove Jesus from your life, your life doesn’t collapse. Things don’t fall apart. Everything does not suddenly collapse.

When you forget to have your daily Quiet Time with Jesus in His Word and prayer…. When you do not encourage and build up the people in your life with the Words of Christ…. When you skip worship…. Does everything fall apart? No, it doesn’t.

At least, not right away. In fact, things may even go easier, smoother. In fact, things may go swimmingly. Until crisis strikes. Then what are you left with? It may even be that the crisis does not strike until you die and face judgment. But the crisis will come. Don’t let the still-standing house, with the cornerstone removed, fool you.

When the crisis strikes, the house will collapse, unless the Cornerstone is holding everything together.

So, my thanks to Mrs. Fairbank and Miss Mockler for a perfect illustration.

In Christ,
Pastor Steve
