Missions Sunday
Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost
September 13, 2009

Prayer for your worship today:  Almighty and eternal God, to know your Son, Jesus, is life. Give us the grace to know him and to worship you in spirit and in truth. Conform our lives to your design, and cast away from us everything that hinders our true worship; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

For those communing today, we encourage you to attend the next Lord’s Supper Seminar.

Prayer Requests may be handed to an usher.

God’s Word for Today

Isaiah 50:4-10

4The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. 5The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. 6I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. 7But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. 8He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. 9Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. 10Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.

James 3:1-12

1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Mark 9:14-29

14When they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to [Jesus] and greeted him. 16And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

MISSIONS AND MINISTRIES

LWML MISSION GRANTS 2009-2011 Biennium   At the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) National Biennium Convention in Portland, Oregon in June, it was voted to raise $1,825,000 in mission grants in the next two years. Donations made to the coffee and goodie fund here at Trinity (Sunday July 23-September 27) will all go toward these mission grants. This sounds like a lot of money to raise from your mites, but year after year since 1943 the LWML has done just that. Please stop by, have a cup of coffee and a goodie and put a donation into the big LWML mite box. Your pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars and checks will be gratefully accepted. Please pick up a copy of the list of Mission Grants on the entryway table.

Health Kit Ingathering  What is this: These are packets of toilet articles to help maintain personal hygiene given to people who have had to flee for their lives leaving everything they own behind. This also pertains to women who seek "Safe Houses" for the same reason. The following items are needed in each Health Kit: one dark-colored hand towel, one dark-colored washcloth, one bath-size bar of soap, one adult size toothbrush in the original wrapper, one sturdy comb, one metal nail fire or nail clippers (no emery boards), and six band-aids secured with a rubber band. If you have a heart for this ministry, please put your contribution in the "Ingathering" box located in the entryway. Thank you.

LWML FALL RALLY   The Rally is Saturday, October 10 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atascadero. Registration and coffee time is at 9:30 am and the fee is $5. The ladies of Redeemer are hosting the lunch. It is the hope many ladies of Trinity will attend since it is "just next door" and is so uplifting to visit with our Lutheran sisters from the seven zone churches. Car pooling to leave the church is at 9:00 a.m.

Members of Thrivent    are eligible to participate in the GivingPlus Program. Donations made to Trinity Lutheran School will be matched $1 for every $2, contributed up to $600 given per member per year. (That’s up to $300 donated by Thrivent.) Forms are available in the church entryway on the school bulletin board or in the school office. Thank you for your support to an enrolled Lutheran ministry.

Men’s Network   Ever wonder if Lutherans will put something together specifically for men’s ministry? Check out the Men’s NetWork at www.lhmmen.com.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Matching Funds   We are eligible for $1,250 in matching funds from Thrivent for church use. Pastor Rowe has chosen the Church Building Repair Fund. During the month of September, we are taking donations to raise $1,250 or more so that we can receive the matching funds. Please mark your donations for Church Building Fund. Thank you for your help!!

Firewood   We have trimmed our oak trees and are splitting it for a fireplace or BBQ. We are selling a cord of word and donating the money to Mission India. We will deliver locally, just need help in unloading. Asking price: $375. Call for more information at 391-3060 or 391-3064. Thank you, Mike and Susie Torgerson

Lutheran Braille Ministries   Celebrating 66 years of ministry, Lutheran Braille Workers has helped visually impaired people touch the Promises of Jesus. Braille and Large Print publications are free of charge to all recipients in 30 languages. If you would like to be a volunteer Braille Worker, please contact Thelma Friedrichs at 237-2568.

Lutheran Hour Ministries Fellowship   Wednesday, October 7 at noon in the Fellowship Hall. Our guest speaker is Linda Erwin from the San Luis Obispo Senior Services. Join us for an informative afternoon! Bring a lunch. Beverages will be provided.

India Missions    Did you know that Trinity supports two different India Mission projects? The first is Mission India where we provide for the starting of new Christian churches in India by training and supporting 10 church planters. This project is partially supported by our multiplication projects. If you would like to donate to this project, please write a check to Trinity and in the memo section write “India Church Planters.”

The second project we support in India is the CNH District Mission trips to the Christian Media Centre in Chennai to provide for support of Lutheran Hour in India. If you would like to support the mission team (which includes six of our own members from Trinity), please write your check to Trinity and in the memo section write, “LLL India Mission Team” or you can donate on the web by going to www.cnhindiamission.org and click on the donate button under the heading “Fundraising Progress.”  We greatly appreciate, as does Our Lord, your support of both of these projects.

IN OUR PRAYERS

Asleep in Jesus   In His infinite wisdom and mercy it has pleased Almighty God to call unto Himself the precious soul of Delores Cave. Delores received her “Crown of Life” on September 2, 2009. We pray for family and friends. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Wedding Anniversaries   Wedding anniversary blessings to the following members of Trinity:

John & Cheryl Everett                                        09/15/2007
Luis & Mendi Leon                                             09/16/2000
Henry & Teresa Giacomantonio                      09/18/1982

May the love that began these relationships continue to be nurtured by Almighty God.

In Our Prayers   We may not know their needs, but God does. Our prayers on a regular basis are an important part of their recovery: For the family of Delores Cave, Linda Falcone, LaRue Ninke, Paul Ernst, and Vi Ernst.

(If you know that a particular person still needs prayers, please call the church office monthly, and we will place that person’s name back on the list.)

We pray for those in the Military:  Air Force:  David & Tiffany Warnke, Chase Johnson, Kevin Andrews / Marines:  Tyler O’Grady, Jonathan Clark, Christopher Clark and Julio King / Navy: Andrew Pina / Coast Guard: David Munns.

For all the soldiers fighting for our freedom: we pray for our nation, our leaders, for the persecuted church, our enemies, and for peace in our nation and the world.

A Prayer for India   “Bless the ministry staff in India as they travel across the country to train project managers for the literacy classes. Lord, bless them with your guidance and wisdom as they choose the right partners to hold these programs. Amen.”
