Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 30, 2009

Prayer for your worship today:  Merciful God, you give eternal life to all who eat the body and blood of your Son, Jesus. Give us faith that will never be ashamed of him, but will take courage from his presence in our lives; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

For those communing today, we encourage you to attend the next Lord’s Supper Seminar.

Prayer Requests may be handed to an usher.

God’s Word for Today

Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9

1“Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the just decrees that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you...6Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8And what great nation is there, that has statutes and just decrees so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children.

Ephesians 6:10-20

210Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Mark 7:14-23

14[Jesus] called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” 17And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

MISSIONS AND MINISTRIES

TRINITY ARCHIVES   We want to thank Vi Ernst for her volunteered hard work and long-time dedication in recording Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Preschool’s past and present events. We thank the Lord for her faithfulness and pray many blessings in return as she retires from her position. Give Vi a call and say a special “thank you” to her.

We are currently looking for an orange World War II flag (white background with a red border and dark colored stars). It has been missing for several years and needs to be returned to the church’s archives. If you have it, please bring it to the church office so we can share it with others. Thank you!

LWML MISSION GRANTS 2009-2011 Biennium   At the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) National Biennium Convention in Portland, Oregon in June, it was voted to raise $1,825,000 in mission grants in the next two years. Donations made to the coffee and goodie fund here at Trinity (Sunday July 23-September 27) will all go toward these mission grants. This sounds like a lot of money to raise from your mites, but year after year since 1943 the LWML has done just that. Please stop by, have a cup of coffee and a goodie and put a donation into the big LWML mite box. Your pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars and checks will be gratefully accepted. Please pick up a copy of the list of Mission Grants on the entryway table.

Old Devotions   We have stopped collecting old devotions due to the increased cost of shipping them overseas. Please share your devotions with friends and neighbors. If you know of a local organization that would like to receive these materials, please call the church office and let us know.

Members of Thrivent  are eligible to participate in the GivingPlus Program. Donations made to Trinity Lutheran School will be matched $1 for every $2, contributed up to $600 given per member per year. (That’s up to $300 donated by Thrivent.) Forms are available in the church entryway on the school bulletin board or in the school office. Thank you for your support to an enrolled Lutheran ministry.

Men’s Network   What happens when you mix guys, good humor, a determination to follow Christ, and the Internet together? The answer is the Men’s NetWork at www.lhmmen.com.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Matching Funds   We are eligible for $1,250 in matching funds from Thrivent for church use. Pastor Rowe has chosen the Church Building Repair Fund. During the month of September, we will be taking donations to raise $1,250 or more so that we can receive the matching funds. Please mark your donations for Church Building Fund. Thank you for your help!!

Tree of Life Baby Bottles  Don't forget to pick up a Tree of Life baby bottle on the entryway table. Take it home and fill it with your spare change - it adds up. It's a great project for children, and needy families benefit from this small act of kindness.

Loaves & Fishes   August is Canned Tuna Month at Loaves and Fishes. Tuna is a good source of protein and is given to almost everyone who comes in to Loaves and Fishes. Please think of Loaves and Fishes when you do your shopping and pick up a couple extra cans of tuna to share with the needy. Thank you for supporting Loaves and Fishes! You may drop off donations in the brown barrel located in the entryway.

Firewood   We have trimmed our oak trees and are splitting it for a fireplace or BBQ. We are selling a cord of word and donating the money to Mission India. We will deliver locally, just need help in unloading. Asking price: $375. Call for more information at 391-3060 or 391-3064. Thank you, Mike and Susie Torgerson

Lutheran Braille Ministries   Lutheran Braille Workers is the largest producer of faith based Braille publications in the world. This is made possible by faithful prayer, willing volunteers and generous gifts. If you would like to volunteer to become a Braille Worker, please contact Thelma Friedrichs at 237-2568.

India Missions    Did you know that Trinity supports two different India Mission projects? The first is Mission India where we provide for the starting of new Christian churches in India by training and supporting 10 church planters. This project is partially supported by our multiplication projects. If you would like to donate to this project, please write a check to Trinity and in the memo section write “India Church Planters.”

The second project we support in India is the CNH District Mission trips to the Christian Media Centre in Chennai to provide for support of Lutheran Hour in India. If you would like to support the mission team (which includes six of our own members from Trinity), please write your check to Trinity and in the memo section write, “LLL India Mission Team” or you can donate on the web by going to www.cnhindiamission.org and click on the donate button under the heading “Fundraising Progress.”  We greatly appreciate, as does Our Lord, your support of both of these projects.

(If you know that a particular person still needs prayers, please call the church office monthly, and we will place that person’s name back on the list.)
