Abe’s question were remarkable, but his body language was even more amazing - his eyes, his face, and his hands. Every part of his being was engaged in the questions. Abe gave me a glimpse into the word “awe” as it is used sparingly in the Scriptures.

And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, "We have seen extraordinary things today." Luke 5:26 ESV

They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people." Luke 7:16 NIV

Jesus’ earthly ministry engaged the entire being of the people, drawing them from the unholy to himself. When he opened their eyes he opened their hearts. When he healed the lame he healed the whole body. When he looked into their face he looked into their soul with eyes of mercy and healing. When he forgave their sin he removed IT! forever and he gave them his righteous life. When he raised the dead the whole person came to life.

There is no awe from a distance, apart from receiving with our whole being – no fractions, no sitting in the back as a long distance observer, no walking the tightrope with one foot in the world and the other in Christ, and no playing games with mercy. We cannot sit lukewarm on the fence pretending to be in awe. Jesus is an all or nothing God.

What miracle do you expect today?  As I sit and watch the sunrise through the damp clouds, light glistening off the trees and brilliant green colors I am reminded that God’s mercy is new every morning. I pray God continue to touch our hearts through the touch of those around me, awakening my life to his love and mercy. I pray God persist in his pursuit of our life – all of it. Are we afraid? Sure. Do we cower in fear that God wants all of me, every part of by being, body, soul, heart, spirit, and mind?  Can we allow Jesus to open my eyes to see this world clearly; open my ears to hear the cry of the hurting; open my lips to speak his healing word? He is working awe in us.

Jesus works his miracle in us. He molds us and makes us his own. Each day is a training session for those days where we will lie at the mercy of God and other people as he is calling me home, as we face death. We are called to learn to rest our being in his mercy, in his eternal life now. God calls us to be in awe now – today is the day to wake up and say, his mercy is for me. The ride is wild, so hang on and be in awe at the work of his hand and in awe of the love with which he fully loves us with his whole being.

May God grant us courage to receive without reservation or posturing or pretending. May God grant us boldness to speak his word. May the peace of God which passes our understanding gently tend to and protect our hearts. Blessings IN Christ, Cindy
