Jesus’ question, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:36, 51; Luke 18:41)continually makes its way back into my heart, soul and mind. The mother of the two disciples wanted status for her sons from Jesus; the blind man wanted his sight restored by Jesus. This question prompted me to write extensively on “what do I want” just a few weeks ago. Today Jesus’ question, “what do you want me to do for you?” leads me want to sit at his feet and ask him, “What do I need to want from you?”

One of Helen Keller’s most famous quotes is, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Perhaps we don’t need Jesus to heal physical blindness in us, but we need him to restore our vision. Jesus’ vision is 20-20. He sees the need of all people for wholeness; he sees their desperate attempts to gain wholeness apart from him. Jesus sees our frantic attempts to achieve wholeness by dabbling with in his mercy and his love. Jesus sees the restoration he won by his perfect life, death and resurrection; he sees the wholeness that is ours IN Christ.

Jesus asks us, “What do you want me to do for you?”  This is our question of faith: “Jesus, what do you want us to want from you?” In Christ vision sees the big picture – we will one day rest in a grave, but the grave will not hold us – Jesus will hold us then, just as he holds us now. In Christ vision sees the big picture – we are not in control – Jesus is, always was, and always will be in control. In Christ vision sees that we can either stomp our feet and say “I will do it myself,” or we can fall at Jesus’ feet asking that he give us courage ask him what we need to want from him and to place our needs and wants in his gracious care.

Jesus restored the blind man’s sight and Jesus restores our vision – by his word, by his work, by re-creating that which is not there or there very dimly. Vision comes from our heart and soul; when Jesus restores our heart and soul he restores our vision.  He calls us to see that he has called us to himself, nourishes and strengthens us with his vision. His vision for us is freedom in his life; freedom to be fully human, fully alive; freedom to live with 20-20 vision.

May God grant us courage to live in his vision for us. May God grant us boldness to ask him what we need to want from him. May his peace guard our hearts. Blessings IN Christ, Cindy
