My Uncle reads NEWK-IT! each morning. He shared his memories of the stories told about the power that supplied this home until electricity made its way east from Paso Robles. He shed light on the light that shone in this house and the energy that powered that light. Afternoon and evening winds spun a turbine which created energy that was stored in batteries. This rough energy had limitations – the batteries had limited storage and the wind didn’t always blow. A back up generator powered by gasoline was used as necessary to power the home. Lights flickered dimly and electrical appliances were not consistently used until 1938 when electric power made its way to our ranch house.

John sheds light on the Light, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. John sheds light on the energy, the creator of all things by his word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5

We think of the Scriptures academically. We think of school lessons and grading; passing or failing. NEWK-IT! is not the time for thinking that way. NEWK-IT! is the time to take a deep breath and reflect on John’s words, to allow the Light and the Word to permeate our heart, soul, body, spirit and mind. Now is the time to reflect on the truth that Jesus is God and that our life, our light, and our energy originates and is sustained by his life, light and energy.

The Light sheds light and no darkness can overcome Him – not ours, not the darkness of the people around us and not the world’s darkness. The Word creates. The Word spoke “let there be light” and there was light. The Word made flesh created out of nothing by his voice.

His voice calls us to put off the old dim, flickering light, to put off the old lies and habits and patters that get in the way of his light. His Word, his voice calls us to his light. His Word, his voice calls us to put on the new – his light and life. The power to put off and put on is not generated within us – his power, his word, his light and his life works in us; he lives in us. We may have a few of the facts wrong about the power at work – it is his, not ours. His word sheds light on the Light.

We are called to rise up and be light. The call and light is generated by him who created out of nothing.  May God grant us courage to allow his light to shine in us. May God grant us boldness to allow his light to shine through us. May the peace that passes understanding guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus and give us freedom. Blessings IN Christ, Cindy
